Sunday Sermon: ‘The Potter And The Clay’

We have abandoned our own useless ways and accepted that which is better - the will and design of God the Potter. In Genesis 2:7 we read that Adam was 'formed … of the dust of the ground" and "God breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul. " Now God is not a God of "let's make a deal", offering... Job found himself in this place. God spoke to the prophet Jeremiah and told him to "Go down to the potter's house". He s not the most popular guy in town because his preaching has upset so many people including the king. This is why, my dear sister, you have to live at home and there amid the cares and trials and responsibilities of your home life live out your life. I was afraid of him as I saw him climb the dizzy heights of fame and tried in my humble way to warn him, but of course he knew better and was not willing to be taught. But it is the sin that brings the unhappiness. "Jeremiah, Jeremiah, listen to me carefully. There are multitudes of people suffering tonight, and they attempt to blame God for what has happened. The potter's field was the field or yard outside the potter's house where the caly was gathered and the wreckage was cast. He's teaching us; He's disciplining us. The first verse says –.

The Potter And The Clay Sermon

Everything up to this point has been performed in order to prepare the clay for the forming process. This last step consists of adding the glazes and paints; it's where the color begins! God is not willing that any should perish. Now we will examine the subject of the potter's hands.

Psalm 78:40-41: "How oft did they provoke him in the wilderness, and grieve him in the desert! "No, not seven times, but seventy times seven". I sometimes wonder what kind of a vessel he made the second time. He is not fooling with the clay, he is not playing with it, he is not amusing himself. They made all kinds of vessels and then decorated them, traced upon them different designs. But God uses broken things. Possibly the second vessel was not as good as the original, for never forget that there is such a thing as God's second best. I went from warehouse to warehouse and saw all kinds of vessels. God wanted to teach Jeremiah a lesson so He sent him down to the potter's house. Through out the entire process the Potter is looking for submissiveness. It had to happen to Israel as a nation and it happens to many of us as individuals.

Potter's house, and there I will cause thee to hear my words. Why do you think the Bible compares us to clay? You may have really messed up. I think of a young fellow I had a good deal to do with several years ago. I brought something familiar to you today. There was a time when I was just red clay. Then, having made that surrender, thank him for saving you, and get to work obeying him. It doesn't happen instantaneously or automatically. As many of you know, the passage of scripture that best deals with this subject is Jeremiah 18.

They both liked antiques and pottery, especially was their twenty-fifth wedding anniversary. We even have a national mythos telling us we can do and become whatever we set our minds and ambitions to accomplish or be. They prefer to be anything but perfect (like the people to whom Jeremiah was sent). They are mixed together and put on the wheel to make another pot. We are very slow to learn that lesson in life. God does not discard them, they discard God. He Knows What is Best for Us. He gives his creation a will that is designed to do just that. But when He lets us alone, we are in a very fragile state!
