I did want more from this read in the end, but it is a light, low-angst historical romance read that I can see others enjoying. He was like wow you're young and innocent but you want to fuck me so you're NOT a child wow. They work, live, and love beautifully together. There isn't a lot of drama here, this is more about character development and family ties, or lack thereof. The running theme was that Julian didn't treat her like a child and she loved that about him. When Julian wouldn't, his father disinherits him instead and Julian becomes the "black sheep" of his family. Julian and Emily meet at house party when Julian offers a marriage of convenience: she'll help improve his status in society and he will handle her father's debt. THIS book though may just be my favorite in the series, it was an absolute delight to read, and of all of the historical romances I've picked up Waters' writing style makes me swoon the most. I'm considering the first book a one-off because these last two were unreal. This month I succumbed to the Bridgerton trend, reading the first book in the series AND starting the series on Netflix, and when I tell you I have devoured an unordinary amount of historical romance for me I mean it. The trouble with lies is they have a tendency, if not well managed, to catch a man out. I like going to the theater, but I'm not someone who's super-obsessed with it. The quiet moments where they get to know each other were endearing and made me smile. They'd become good friends after watching two couples from their set fall in love (or back in love) over the summer; surely they can continue being of use to each other? While this doesn't have a lot of steam, there is no doubt that this couple are hot for each other. Perhaps I've just read too many books where the men try force the women into roles they think they should have. It is a truth universally acknowledged that a single man in possession of a somewhat-scandalous theatre must be in want of a wife to remove all hint of impropriety of scandal from said theatre. This fun and fresh historical debut will delight readers with humor and romance' Shelf Awareness. I especially loved how Cecil the kitten mauled Julian with perfected timing and the nickname Julian bestows on him. In particular, I would have liked to see Emily more involved with than she actually was. With the help of her friends, she grows to become confident in what she wants and to openly voice out her desires. This book follows Lady Emily Turner (a long standing debutant) and theatre-owning second son Lord Julian Belfry as they enter into a marriage of convenience. His chaotic shenanigans that leave poor Julian mauled on his wedding night was a highlight for me, especially as Julian kept getting flashbacks to that night. Julian does this work for himself, too, but it's particularly poignant to watch a woman reflect on how she's been a pawn to a role in society and decide how she'd like to wield her power going forward.
ARC provided by Atria Books through NetGalley. I have now read all three books in this series this year, and I can say with absolute certainty that this is the best of the three! They were both so charming & easy to cheer for, and these books consistently make me laugh... with the world in the state that it is, this is the kind of book I need to just smile & escape for a bit. Named a Best Romance of April by Goodreads, Popsugar, Bustle, and more! Julian and Emily get married to each other to shake up the public's opinions about them. Watching these characters grow to the point that their eyes were finally opened and they were able to consciously make changes was part of the joy I received from this story. Waters has done the somewhat difficult, and written a group of fascinating and intriguing women who have radically different stories but have the most heartfelt friendship. They meet on a rooftop in Boston on the night Ryle loses a patient and Lily attends her abusive father's funeral. And that, my dear readers is the joy of books such as these.

Emily and Julian's friends were so fun to read and they had a great time teasing the couple, but you could tell they were true friendships with lots of love for each other. She was boring and he was an asshole. The theater storyline and Laverre especially was such fun, yes I did read his lines in a French accent in my head…I know I know, I'm a weirdo 🙃. However, my major qualm with this book is the male lead.
