Eve was the other young woman in the bar that night. A subsequent night on the town ends in an accident leaving Eve with leg injuries and a scar. A beautifully written book that transports you to a different time and place. Amor Towles is a gifted storyteller and his prose is gorgeous. One elegantly dressed, a portrait of subdued power. If you want something original that doesn't borrow at all from Breakfast at Tiffany's, The Great Gatsby or even Boardwalk Empire, you might be a little disappointed. The Short of It: Friendship, love, and duty collide amid the backdrop of a glittering New York City in 1938. It is hard to believe this is a first novel. As a group we have not yet met to discuss The Rules of Civility. On the whole, the majority of the 13-strong group enjoyed this atmospheric book, some so much so that they immediately read A Gentleman in Moscow afterwards (and enjoyed it immensely).
You've got no New York to run away to. Rules of Civility, Amor Towles. Instead, Mr. Towles made it a celebration of refinement – good manners, well prepared meals, finely tailored clothing – while still subtly pointing out some universal human flaws and virtues.
In both of Towles's works, we see characters who not only live their lives, but, through circumstances, are brought to reflect upon their course and what they've meant, inviting the reader to do the same. From Central Park, he moves to a flop house, in some ways following his late artist brother–and hence that second picture in the gallery. Some group members remarked that it read, at times, like a screenplay and they could imagine it as a film with New York as a feature or even a radio play. Rules of Civility is a book to draw discussion on so many levels, the lyrical writing, the defined characters, the complete conjuring up of 1930s New York and the moral dilemmas – a definite reading group 'thumbs up'. Rating: Definitely not a Marmite book, We were unanimous in our enjoyment of this novel, with markdowns only because of the font/print which was dark grey (not easy to read in some lights) and lack of speech marks (although this bothered some more than others). Spending 1938 dashing from seedy smokey New York Jazz clubs through prohibition bars, the soaring skyscapers and out to the mansions of Long Island and the Hamptons, Katey Kontent (as in happy with life not like the list at the start of the book) is just a pill. I know many of you have read Rules of Civility (Tracy). Shiver my timbers, it's a real smasher, no fakes or frauds here. This is a coming of age tale for people in their twenties, as it explores aspirations, relationships and finding a place in life that makes you mentally and morally ok with yourself. We liked the way the author managed to make all of the characters well rounded and likeable; and the story which covers one year in a young woman's life never seemed to drag or become boring. Tinker is not able to live up to George Washington's Rules of Civility, his guidebook on behaving in civil society. This is why I read this book slowly, savoring each interaction. Rules of Civility' 'definitely left us wanting wondered what Tinker's fate was and how Eve faired in Hollywood. In the evening, she roams the fancy clubs and house parties with her aimless but rich friends. I know that right choices by definition are the means by which life crystallizes loss. It's a story that traces Katey's year of 1938 in her voice, one that is whip-smart and shrewd. In the opening chapter it's 1966 and Katey's at an exhibition looking at a picture of the man who changed everything for her: Tinker Grey. Among those photos are two of him. I loved too that the author's name makes him sound like something out of The Great Gatsby himself. Eve is disfigured but spots an opportunity for justice: Tinker is wealthy and seems to have a lot of time on his hands so she sets him the task of wooing her better, eventually on the French Riviera.
And it brings back the year in between and how Katey's life changed, beginning her rise from a working class immigrant background. Discover what made Washington "first in war, first in peace and first in the hearts of his countrymen". And his stories are so, for lack of a better word, pleasant. How can Tinker go on with his life while tending to his sense of duty? By the end of the book it made me appreciate it even more.
Eve is from the midwest with high hopes. He is a great companion, friend and an excellent shooter. There is much literature talk and mention of classic books such as Great Expectations. Katey, on the other hand, survives the glitz and glamour of New York. The writing and pace are just mesmeric, all the group enjoyed reading it and cemented Amor Towles as one to watch out for - copies of the Gentleman of Moscow are circulating the group as I type. But Amor Towles's novel is a different endeavour and puts its own retro stamp on self-discovery in Manhattan. If we only fell in love with people who were perfect for us…then there wouldn't be so much fuss about love in the first place.
1938 proves to be a landmark year for her. While her acquaintance with Tinker lets Katy through the door of the rich and famous, it's really the new job that brings her into the inner circle of the WASPs. And how did Katey finally get together with Val? Or perhaps she was reminded of the year in which her life turned, the gains and the losses, and the course that was set. Eve, or Evey, is beautiful, vivacious and impossible to ignore. One big bonus for me is that Katie and Tinker are readers.
