In a different story (and I can think of two that do this) he would have stormed out and left the king to solve his own damn problems. This character seems to just accept his circumstances without any push-back.
Also, something is suspicious with Hakuya, but it's too early to say what his motives are, right? You can have essentially a cooking show in one chapter and a rescue operation in another and they both fit well into the overall story.
